Охрана атмосферыJSCo “RZD” makes all and every possible effort to reduce the emission of pollutants from stationary and mobile sources. The company conducts regular internal inspections of mainline and shunting diesel locomotives, as well as track equipment, to ensure compliance with technical standards for emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. Diagnostic complexes at environmental control stations are used for this purpose. Emissions measurements are also taken following rheostat tests of diesel locomotives.

STATIONARY SOURCES

Emissions from stationary sources account for about 19% of the total JSCo “RZD” emissions.

As part of the implementation of the JSCo “RZD” Environmental Strategy, emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere from stationary sources decreased by 5.6% in 2023 compared to 2022 (the target was 3.2%). This reduction in emissions was due to energy-saving measures and improvements in energy efficiency, including the reconstruction and conversion of boiler houses to alternative fuels. Currently, the share of thermal energy produced by boiler houses operating on natural gas has reached 45.7%.

The use of alternative energy sources in hot water supply systems (solar collectors) and heat supply systems (heat pumps) has been on the rise. There are 48 pellet-fueled boiler houses in operation, which have replaced small coal and diesel boiler houses. The company is also undertaking measures to reconstruct and install new dust and gas cleaning systems.

MOBILE SOURCES

Emissions from mobile sources account for about 81% of gross emissions, with around 88% being contributed by mainline and shunting diesel locomotives. Measures to improve the energy efficiency of the transportation process have allowed the company to reduce the volume of diesel-powered transportation operations, the waiting time, the time of passenger train regaining, and the specific diesel fuel consumption for train traction. These efforts made it possible to reduce the specific emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere from mobile sources to 33.6 mg/t-km, compared to the target of 36.9 mg/t-km.

MODERN ROLLING STOCK WITH IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

In 2023, the network received 100 units of track machines and mechanisms, 54 electric trains, and 557 locomotives. These included 247 new-series diesel locomotives and 310 electric locomotives, of which 282 were freight locomotives and 28 were passenger locomotives. For transportation on the Baikal-Amur Mainline, a new 2(3)TE28 mainline diesel locomotive with a Russian-made 18-9DGM diesel engine and a collector traction drive was created in 2023. Acceptance testing of the EMKA2 shunting locomotive with a hybrid drive system using lithium-ion battery packs was also completed in 2023. Today, JSCo “RZD” transports over 86% of freight and 85% of passengers using electric traction.
