PASSENGER TRAIN CATEGORIES VARY DEPENDING ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Travel distance

Passenger trains are divided into long-distance and suburban depending on the travel distance and travel conditions:

  • long-distance trains covering distances of more than 150 km with travel conditions applicable to long-distance trains;
  • suburban trains covering distances of no more than 200 km with travel conditions applicable to suburban services, or over 200 km within the boundaries of one constituent entity of the Russian Federation, or within the boundaries of two constituent entities of the Russian Federation, one of which is a city of federal significance.
Speed ​​of travel

A distinction is made between high-speed, express, fast and passenger trains:

  • high-speed trains are designed for transportation at speeds of over 200 kilometres per hour (this category was introduced in accordance with Federal Law No. 448-FZ passed on 30 November 2024 "On Amendments to Federal Law No. 17-FZ "On Railway Transport in the Russian Federation" and Federal Law No. 18-FZ "Charter of Railway Transport of the Russian Federation" passed on 1 September 2025);
  • express passenger trains must have a route speed of at least 91 kph with permissible speeds between 141-200 kph;
  • fast passenger trains must have a route speed from 50 kph to 91 kph;
  • passenger trains have a route speed of less than 50 kph.
Service Regularity Passenger trains are divided into year-round, seasonal and one-time trains.
Frequency of service Passenger trains are divided into daily, every other day (on odd or even days) on days of the week or dates of the month.
Level of service provided Passenger trains with high-class service and a wide range of services are assigned the category "Branded." Trains served by motor car rolling stock are divided into trains with increased comfort and those without additional services.
