Russian Railways offers comfortable conditions for passengers with disabilities who are travelling on public rail transport.
Carriers carry out systematic personnel training, including giving instruction and training to conductors of passenger carriages and train chiefs on servicing passengers with limited mobility.
Long-distance passenger trains include specialised carriages that are available to all passengers, including those using a wheelchair.
These carriages are equipped with auxiliary equipment for boarding and disembarking passengers in wheelchairs: automated lifting devices are provided to facilitate boarding and disembarking from low platforms and ramps have been installed at stations with high platforms.
The ample width of doorways, aisles and corridors in areas designated for disabled passengers ensures that wheelchairs can move freely.
One bathroom in the carriage is universal and available to all passengers, including those using a wheelchair.
Sound and visual information in the carriages is duplicated. Information plates and accessibility signs are displayed using the Braille dotted font.
In specialised carriages with berths, as well as in double-decker carriages with seats, a compartment is equipped for a disabled person and his/her attendant. The compartment has 2 or 4 berths, space for wheelchairs and a communication system for contacting the conductor.
A passenger with a disability and one accompanying person can book tickets for seats/berths 21 and 22 or 23 and 24 in a 4-seater/berth specialised compartment on the website by indicating their SNILS/ personal insurance policy number in their user’s personal account.
Passengers should note that empty seats/berths can be purchased by other passengers with limited mobility.
When a disabled person is travelling with more than 2 accompanying persons, the third and fourth tickets can only be booked at the ticket office on one order.
In specialised carriages with seats on Sapsan and Lastochka trains, places (platforms) are equippedso as to accommodate passengers in a wheelchair. If desired, the passenger can transfer to a chair.
