New vestibule for stopping points at Square of Three Stations MCD-2 and MCD-4 opens in Moscow
A comprehensive reconstruction of the stopping points at the Square of Three Stations in Moscow has been completed. The stopping points are already receiving passengers from the Nakhabino – Podolsk line on the Moscow Central Diameter 2 (MCD-2) and is fully ready for integration into MCD-4.
During the reconstruction of this section, railway workers rebuilt 47 city links with a total length of about 10 km which ensured the maintenance of 6 objects.
As part of the work, the approaches to the Kursk railway station were also completely redone, which involved reconstructing the Kazakovsky road overpass and strengthening the Novobasmanny overpass and pedestrian bridge in the Khomutovsky Typik. In addition, 1.8 km of retaining walls up to 9.6 m high were built, which also perform the function of suppressing noise from the railway line, 90,000 cubic metres of concrete retaining walls and overpass supports were poured, and 8 km of tracks and 18 switch assemblies laid.
For passengers using the central diameters, two island platforms and a passenger vestibule were built at the stopping points at the Square of Three Stations. The first parts were opened to passengers in July 2022 and fully opened on 2 June 2023. After the launch of MCD-4, a convenient two-minute transfer between D2 and D4 was built, and trains now stop twice as often as before, with an interval of about 3 minutes during peak hours.
The stopping points at the Square of Three Stations is an exemplary hub with ticket offices, lifts and escalators, ticket printing and vending machines, sanitary rooms, waiting rooms for trains and dynamic navigation. There are also video information terminals with convenient interfaces which enable passengers to find the necessary information themselves or use the services of an operator via video link. In 2023-2024, all transport hubs of the Moscow Central Diameters will be equipped with such video information terminals. The stopping points at the Square of Three Stations are also equipped with a seamless Wi-Fi system. After a one-time log-in to the network, passengers receive continuous access to high-speed Internet via Wi-Fi.
During the construction work, the historical appearance of the Kalanchevsky overpass and the stopping points at the Square of Three Stations was recreated. When carrying out the finishing work, atypical solutions were used which were stylised in the manner reminiscent of the beginning of the twentieth century. For example, to preserve the neoclassical design of the Kalanchevsky overpass with arches, pylons and niches, the construction workers lined it with crushed gray granite, repeating in the decoration the layered texture of the facade created by the architect Alexei Shchusev.
