Last section of the China-bound railway now electrified
In the spring of 2021, regular traffic began on the electrified section Borzya – Zabaikalsk (Transbaikal Territory, Chinese border).
The electrification of the Borzya – Zabaikalsk section is part of the renovation of the Karymskaya – Zabaikalsk railway line linking the Trans-Siberian Railway to the Zabaikalsk – Manchuria border crossing, the gateway to China.
To electrify the last section 117 km long, the railway workers installed a contact network (over 340 km of total length), 2 traction substations and 4 autotransformer substations, upgraded communication lines and traffic control devices along the route. At peak times, the project engaged 500+ people, 100+ units of construction machinery, including 80 rail-mounted units.
Russian Railways invested over 9.3 billion rubles in the electrification of the Borzya – Zabaikalsk section. The through traffic on the newly-electric section boosted the daily throughput capacity of this southbound line to 110 pairs of trains.
