8300-kW GT1-001 gas turbine locomotive the world's first to pull 15K-ton freight train

1746590.jpgRussian Railways tested the latest model of traction rolling stock, the first Russian gas turbine locomotive GT1-001.

The test practically proved the locomotive’s capacity to carry long heavy trains (up to 159 freight wagons). None of the modern locomotives can carry trains of such a weight.

The gas turbine locomotive runs on liquefied natural gas and is designed to operate on non-electrified sections of railways.

The gas turbine locomotive consists of two sections. One houses a turbine and a power unit, another houses a 17-ton fuel tank. One filling is enough for 750 km. The total (maximum) capacity of the gas turbine locomotive is 8,300 kW, the total weight is 300 tonnes.
