HISTORY OF OMSK RAILWAY STATION
Construction of the West Siberian Railway was carried out from two sides at the same time: on the 745-verst (795-km) western section from Chelyabinsk to Omsk; and on the eastern section from Omsk to Krivoshchekovo. The original Omsk railway station building, designed by the engineer Hekstrem, was completed in 1896. It was a standard design – a single-storey brick building with basement rooms and a rubble stone footing.
In 1907 – 1914, brick extensions were added to the existing building, and the furnace heating system was replaced with steam heating. The area of the passenger service facilities was increased to 930 square metres.
Reconstruction of the station building, platform, and station square was completed in early 1958, and a wooden baggage storage room was added. The station was renovated and reconstructed several times in the years that followed. Working conditions for station workers was improved, and the range of services provided to passengers was expanded.
In 1975 – 1978, the building’s façade was completely renovated and coated with marble chips.
A major overhaul of the building’s façade was carried out in 1996: the rough cast was repaired and painted, and the window frames were replaced.
The façade was overhauled once again in 1999: the rough cast was cleaned of dirt, plastered, and painted with water-based paints; the outside of the luggage compartment was stripped of its old plaster, replastered, and painted with water-based paints. The base of the building was coated with natural stone.
The station building underwent further reconstruction in 2006 – 2007. The area of the utility rooms was expanded to 10,000 square metres, and the area surrounding the station to 30,000 square metres, including 5000 square metres given over to lawns and greenery.
