Krasnoyarsk railway station is located on the main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the capital of Krasnoyarsk Krai – the city of Krasnoyarsk.
The original station was built in 1895 to an architectural design by Nikolai Solovyov. It was a brick building, plastered inside and out, decked out with ornamental features and featuring waiting rooms for people travelling in first- and second-class. The station soon became more than simply a place of departure for passengers. It was the centre of Krasnoyarsk’s cultural life – various public events were held here, and the city’s residents essentially used the station’s buffet bar as a restaurant, taking their entire families here. The station also had an automated library, a telephone and a telegraph.
As the population of Krasnoyarsk grew, the railway station’s small size started to become a serious problem. The decision to overhaul the facility was made in the 1950s. The new station opened its doors to passengers in September 1961.
The Krasnoyarsk Railway Station that we know today was built in 2004. The reconstruction work was carried out using a special technology without disturbing its historical appearance. The building area was almost doubled (from 7000 to 13,000 square metres). In addition, a separate room for commuters, three lounges, and a covered pedestrian bridge were added, and the station square was remodelled.
The station was upgraded again in anticipation of the XXIX Winter Universiade in 2019. The facility was fully adapted for passengers with limited mobility, lifts were installed, tactile symbols were fixed onto the walls, navigation of the building was simplified, and new information and ticketing systems were introduced. In addition, the outside of the building was decorated with architectural highlighting.
The station is also the cultural centre of the regional capital: concerts, art exhibitions, meet-and-greets, and master classes are held here on a regular basis. Today, Krasnoyarsk Railway Station serves as an intermodal transport hub connecting commuter and long-distance passenger routes, intracity lines, and intercity motorways. The station is recognized as one of the most beautiful and hassle-free in the Trans Urals.
