About the train

From 19 December 2024, the legendary "Aurora" trains No. 741/742 and No. 743/744 will resume services between St. Petersburg – Moscow.

The high-speed train is made up of modern double-decker cars and can reach speeds of up to 160 kph.

Trains depart daily – early in the morning and in the afternoon and arrive in the afternoon and evening respectively.

The "Aurora" has the optimal combination of speed, comfort and an attractive fare. Among high-speed trains, it is a budget option for travelling between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Interesting facts about the train:

  • The "Aurora" used to run between the two capitals from 1963 to 2010. During this period, the train consisted of single-decker carriages.
  • Until 1984, the train ran under the number 9/10. It was then assigned number 159/160.
  • Initially, the carriages were painted in a dark cherry red with a yellow window strip. The inscription "Aurora" was done in overhead letters. Later, the corporate paintwork became grey-blue, with a dark blue stripe along the bottom of the carriage body and a red inscription "Aurora."
  • The carriages with seats were equipped with airplane-type chairs, air conditioning units and fluorescent lighting.
  • The train became an important stage in the development of high-speed travel. It could achieve a speed of up to 160 kph and covered the distance between the capitals in 5 hours 27 minutes.

Train composition

Double-decker rolling stock:

  • standard-configuration carriages with seats (standard layout, 104 seats);
  • improved-configuration carriages with seats "Business" (improved layout, 60 seats);
  • compartment carriage (30/20 seats);
  • sleeper carriage (30 seats);
  • restaurant carriage.

The 15 carriages of each new train have a total of about 1,200 seats for passengers.

In carriages with seats, travellers can relax in comfortable chairs with folding tables and footrests. Each seat is equipped with individual power outlets, as well as USB and Type-C ports for charging mobile devices.

In carriages with improved-configuration seats, passengers will be able to adjust the angle of the seat back individually. The distance between the seats has been increased and additional headrest pillows installed at the head of the seat. The seats can also be rotated 180 degrees, which is very convenient. In addition, these carriages have a separate two-seater compartment with a monitor.

The compartment car has a specialised compartment for a wheelchair user and an accompanying person.

All carriages are equipped with air conditioning, air disinfection systems and bio-toilets. The cars with seats also have additional space for luggage and hand luggage.

The train’s interior and equipment include thematic images that remind passengers of the two capitals of St. Petersburg and Moscow. Calm blue, grey and beige tones have been employed in the materials used to finish the seats.

 

Services

Passengers can buy tickets for sleeper carriages (class 1E), compartment cars, and carriages with seats – for Business and Economy class.

Depending on the class of service, passengers are provided with:

  • travel kits;
  • on-board magazine;
  • blankets (in carriages with seats);
  • meals included in the ticket price (in the luxury carriages with seats in the Business class and sleeper carriages).

Passengers in sleeper and business class carriages can visit the luxury lounges at Moskow and Leningrad railway stations.

The train is equipped with the "Poputchik" information and entertainment system, which provides passengers access to films, the latest press, and a large number of interesting electronic and audio books, as well as a choice of music. In addition, passengers can use "Poputchik" to order meals from the dining car or view the train’s route.

The train has a double-decker wagon bistro.

In addition to food and drinks, passengers in the bistro car can also purchase gastronomic souvenirs: "Petersburg" chocolate souvenir biscuits, Montpensier "Views of St. Petersburg", postcards with dark chocolate "St. Petersburg – Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood", and "Old Petersburg – St. Isaac's Cathedral" black tea.

In the luxury carriages with seats in the Business class and sleeper carriages, passengers have a choice of three meal options (cold appetizer, hot dish, dessert, pastry and hot drinks).

Passengers in sleeper carriages are provided with an assortment of seasonal fruits, chocolate in branded packaging and soft drinks upon boarding. Before arriving at the destination station, passengers are provided with a pastry in a branded gift box.

A vegetarian meal can be provided at the passenger’s request.

When purchasing a children’s ticket in sleeper carriages, a children’s meal and a toy are provided.
