New bridge opens across Areda River on Trans-Siberian
The new bridge across the Areda River is an important facility on the Trans-Baikal Main Line because the railway provides rail transport for more than 60% of the freight flows between Russia and China.
The construction of the bridge entailed working under difficult natural and climatic conditions and the ongoing extremely intensive operations of the rail network. But in spite of these difficulties, the bridge’s design and construction were nevertheless completed in just 7 months, which is 2-3 times faster than the standard periods required for the implementation of similar projects on the network under normal conditions.
During the work, two 55-metre superstructures were installed and 2.4 km of new tracks laid. The new bridge crossing is designed for the passage of heavy trains with a load of up to 32 tons per axle and a speed of up to 100 kph.
