The Russian Ministry of Railways adopted the resolution to build the Ladoga railway station on January 11, 2001. The zero construction cycle kicked off in March of the same year. Regular commuter services were launched on May 17, 2003.

The idea of this station can be traced back to the 1970s. This was necessitated by excessive passenger ridership at the Moskovsky and Finlyandsky termini (the latter long being the busiest in Russia in terms of suburban traffic). They had exhausted their capacities for further growth and desperately needed unloading. Besides, the rapid development of the right-bank part of the city demanded better mass transit services.

The Russian Railways allocated 3.7 billion rubles for the construction of the Ladoga railway station. It is where the "smart building" technology was applied for the first time, which implied the streamlined interaction of more than 30 subsystems, including security, engineering controls, IT, communications, and power supply.

Ladozhsky railway station complex keeps growing and boosting the passenger traffic thus unloading the Moskovsky railway station.
