Museum Stations

Borodino

Borodino field

Borodino station is situated close to the former battlefield: the tracks lay next to the location where the right flank of the Russian troops was based. One of the monuments of the memorial complex is 50 meters away from the station, thus allowing tourists to enter the open-air museum as soon as they disembark from the train.

An exposition dedicated to the Patriotic War of 1812 is demonstrated in the Borodino station building. It was created by employees of the State Borodino War and History Museum and Reserve with the assistance of the local branch of Russian Railways.

Getting around

By electric trains from the Belorussky railway station in Moscow (aka Moskva-Smolenskaya).

Historical background

Borodino station was founded in 1869 on the Borodino battlefield during the construction of the Moscow – Brest railway.

In 1902, at the initiative of the workers of this trunk line, the idea of the first ever Borodino battle museum began to come true. The museum was opened in 1903 in one of the halls of Borodino station. In 1923, the exposition was transferred to the Borodino Military History Museum. In October 1941, the station building was ruined. The new station in Borodino was built in 1953. However, it was no longer used for museum exhibitions.

On September 7, 2002, the station was re-opened after a large-scale renovation. The revamped Borodino station meets all modern requirements. Note that the renovation preserved and restored all the architectural details of the 19th century.
